Joey Jones to be inducted into Mobile Sports Hall of Fame

It's hard to imagine Joey Jones as an insurance salesman. He had trouble with it, too.

But his time in that profession made him realize where he should be, and eventually led him back to his hometown to become the head coach of the University of South Alabama football team.



Antonio Lang honored to be inducted into Mobile Sports Hall of Fame

Antonio Lang has often found himself in an interesting place or position.

He was the go-to player on LeFlore's 1989 state championship basketball team and was the valedictorian of his class. As one of the most highly sought-after basketball recruits in Mobile's history, he signed with Duke and was part of back-to-back national championships teams in 1991 and 1992.



Willie Anderson's journey to Mobile Sports Hall of Fame started at grocers


Sports started becoming a focus in Willie Anderson's life around 1986, when he was 11 years old. To get his sports fix in those days, he would head to the local grocery store.

"There was a Food World grocery store in Whistler near where I lived," Anderson said. "I used to walk to the store every day to read the Athlon (preseason college football) magazines.



Mobile Sports Hall of Fame: Former LPGA star Susie Redman remembers early-morning practice with dad

When Susie Redman was in the 10th grade and just beginning to realize her golfing talent, her father, Robert Pager, would wake her up and push her out the back door of their home along the 15th hole at Lake Forest Golf Course.

He would be carrying a tube that contained 23 golf balls, and he wanted her to hit each one before heading off to school.



Dolly White, former player in women's league, in a league of her own


Walking down the street to a local playground and ballpark led Dr. Delores "Dolly" Brumfield White places she never dreamed of visiting and on an adventure she is still a part of.

It was, she says, simply meant to be.



Mobile Sports Hall of Fame: Chris Samuels impressive career almost ended before hitting college


To review Chris Samuels' football career is to be impressed:


He was a prominent prep recruit at Shaw High School, an All-America player and Outland Trophy winner at Alabama, the No. 3 overall selection in the 2000 NFL draft and a six-time Pro Bowl selection.


Alabama's Chris Samuels, Auburn's Willie Anderson Among Mobile's Sports Hall of Fame Class

Boasting of new goals, a new direction and renewed enthusiasm, Mobile Sports Hall of Fame president Randy Patrick announced the six members of the Class of 2011 on Monday afternoon at the RSA Tower.

The class includes former NFL players Willie Anderson and Chris Samuels, South Alabama head football coach Joey Jones, former Duke and NBA basketball player Antonio Lang, former LPGA player Susie Redman and former All-American Girls Professional Baseball League player Dr. Delores "Dolly" Brumfield White.
